Triangle/Regional/North Carolina Facts

Research Triangle Park (RTP): Created in 1959, this public/private, planned research park is home to R&D in fields such as biotechnology, chemicals and telecommunications. On 7,000 acres, more than 100 companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Lenovo, Cisco Systems and Bayer CropScience are developing innovative solutions to pressing global issues. Building partnerships among business, academia and industry, RTP works closely with NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke.

The Research Triangle: This term refers to the region formed by three major research universities to Research Triangle Park: NC State University in Raleigh, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Duke University in Durham. The Triangle has also been broadened to refer to the three cities Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

Wake County: Part of the fastest-growing metropolitan area in North Carolina, Wake County has grown almost 50% over the last decade with a population of almost 750,000. The county is made up of 12 communities; Raleigh is its largest city.

North Carolina: With a population of more than eight million, the Tar Heel State is famous for its unique blend of Southern charm and global sophistication.
