May is Global Accessibility Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to talk about something we care about all year-round. At the Raleigh Convention Center, we believe great event experiences should be accessible to everyone who comes through our doors. "A space for everybody" is more than a tagline on our website, it's how we make decisions about our facility, our staff training, our digital presence, and the services we offer.
The ADA sets a floor, and we strive to build well above it. The facility has automatic doors at every entrance, elevators on every level with doors at least 42 inches wide, braille placards on all room signage, and accessible restrooms on every floor. Guests can borrow a wheelchair at the Main Lobby security kiosk, and guests with service animals will find a dedicated relief area on the Sir Walter Plaza. We're also KultureCity-certified, offering sensory-inclusive kits to any attendee in need. Mamava nursing pods are available on the Main and Mezzanine Levels.
One of our most recent investments is an upgrade to our assistive listening system. The new technology gives attendees with hearing disabilities a clearer, more reliable experience across all of our event spaces. Contact your event organizer in advance or stop by the security kiosk to check out these devices.
Our website is tested regularly against WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards for both compliance and usability, and we partner with Ablr, a local accessibility firm led by people who are blind and visually impaired, to audit our digital content and keep us accountable.
Each year, members of our team attend Global Accessibility Awareness Day event right here in Raleigh. The conversations we have there directly shape how we approach our website, our training, and the experience we create for guests.
